Birth Support
Giving Birth in Costa Rica
Choosing to give birth in another country is a big decision. Costa Rica offers high-quality medical care, experienced maternity professionals, and a growing culture of respectful and informed birth. Still, navigating the system as a foreigner can feel confusing without proper guidance.
I am a bilingual doula and maternal support professional with 8 years of experience accompanying families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care in Costa Rica. My role is to help you understand your options clearly and support you emotionally as you make decisions that feel right for you and your family.
8+ Years Supporting Birth in Costa Rica
With over eight years of experience accompanying families from around the world, I understand both the emotional and logistical challenges of giving birth abroad.
I support women, couples, and families who seek:
Clear communication in English & Spanish
Respectful, informed birth choices
Emotional safety in an unfamiliar healthcare system
A calm, grounded presence throughout the process
This is not about control or perfection—it’s about feeling supported, heard, and empowered.
How I Support International Families
My consultation for foreign families is designed to provide clarity, confidence, and realistic expectations about giving birth in Costa Rica. During our session, I guide you through the different birth options available, including public and private hospitals, home birth possibilities, and how care may vary depending on your residency status. We also review legal and practical considerations such as required documentation, hospital procedures, birth registration, and what foreign parents need to prepare before arriving.
In addition, I offer clear information about reproductive rights during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care within the Costa Rican healthcare system. As part of the consultation, I provide trusted, personalized referrals to obstetricians, midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, and prenatal and postpartum specialists, always aligned with your values, preferences, and medical needs. Above all, the consultation is a space for your questions and concerns, where we take time to address cultural differences, communication with healthcare providers, partner involvement, and any specific situation unique to your family.
Benefits of Having a Birth Doula
Choosing to have a birth doula by your side can profoundly transform your birth experience — whether you welcome your baby at home, in a private hospital, or in a public hospital.
Having María José as your birth doula means having continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout labor. She provides calm presence, grounding techniques such as breathwork, rebozo, movement, aromatherapy, and comfort positioning, helping you feel safe and empowered in every stage.
In hospital settings, she supports clear communication and helps you understand your options so you can make informed decisions with confidence. At home births, she helps create a nurturing, intentional environment that honors your rhythm and birth plan. Her presence can reduce fear, increase confidence, support partner involvement, and contribute to a more positive and connected birth memory. With María José beside you, birth becomes not just a medical event — but a supported, respected, and deeply human experience.
